The Charismatic and New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) church networks have embraced the counterfeit Kundalini Spirit believing it to be the Holy Spirit. Contrary to what leaders of these movements want people to believe, practices such as being slain in the Spirit, holy laughter, shaking, jerking, speaking in gibberish tongues, ecstatic dancing, fire tunnels, and frantic running around the sanctuary do not originate from Christian doctrine and are not manifestations of the Holy Spirit or the power of God. In reality, these practices are demonic and come from New Age philosophies and East Indian Hindu traditions.
All the physical manifestations mentioned above are actual signs of having had a “Kundalini awakening.”
A Kundalini awakening is described as a powerful spiritual experience where a person practicing yoga or transcendental meditation begins a journey to achieve a sense of oneness with all beings on a universal level. The ultimate goal is realizing their ability to be one with God and therefore God themselves. It is said that a dormant, coiled “serpent” energy at the base of the spine, when awakened, rises through the chakras to bring spiritual enlightenment. When this energy is first released, it completely overwhelms a person and can trigger intense, orgasmic-like sensations throughout the body. This often leads to an insatiable sexual desire and other strange cravings.
In yoga traditions, a person who has had a Kundalini awakening must immediately seek the guidance of an experienced Yogi, who can help guide and control these strong energy currents. With a Kundalini awakening comes many physical manifestations such as spontaneous shaking, jerking, involuntary body movements, ecstatic dancing, and uncontrollable laughing, crying, or screaming. These manifestations are called Kriyas and are exactly similar to the practices seen in the Charismatic churches. Referred to by pastors and preachers as “the manifest presence of God” or “the glory,” many Christians unknowingly fall under the spell of the Kundalini energy, which is mistaken as the workings of the Holy Spirit.
Many yoga practitioners fear and respect a Kundalini awakening because they know that their lives will be set on pause for as long as the awakening lasts, which is usually 2-5 years. Once it is awakened, it cannot be stopped. It must be seen through to the end, where the supposed enlightenment has come to full fruition. New Age practitioners know the dangers of a Kundalini awakening, but most Western churchgoers have no idea what this is, and do not realize the powers they are playing with. Without knowing they have exposed themselves to demonic, New Age powers, many Christians begin experiencing the symptoms of a Kundalini awakening after going to these churches and having received an “impartation” by the laying on of hands or being blown on or waved at. It may seem fun at first, but it quickly spirals into uncontrollable manifestations that lead them further into darkness. Left without deliverance and repentance, many people’s lives get completely destroyed. They begin experiencing mental health issues including confusion, delusion, anxiety, obsession, OCD, racing thoughts, depression, non-stop talking, difficulty concentrating, and much more. Some can’t work anymore, can’t study, can’t behave normally due to the rush of spiritual energy streaming through their bodies. Some people get so damaged they become a danger to themselves and others, and they find it hard to live a regular life.
Although you many times find high-level preachers in these churches shaking or jerking while preaching, praying, or prophesying over people, there is no Scriptural basis to justify this behavior. It isn’t found anywhere in the Bible that Christian believers were ever slain in the Spirit, got drunk in the Holy Ghost, laughed uncontrollably, touched and blew on each other, jerked, shook, spoke in gibberish tongues, called the fire of God on each other, screamed, made involuntary sensual body movements or dances, or rolled around on the ground. All these practices are derived from the New Age movement and have nothing to do with Christianity.
KUNDALINI & REVIVAL
How are the Kundalini spirit and the idea of a worldwide revival connected? For years, leaders in the Charismatic churches have falsely propagated that the physical manifestations mentioned above are the power of God at work signifying the outbreak of a worldwide revival that will usher in the End-Times spoken of in the Bible.
Quoting Acts 2, they misuse Scripture to justify this deception. In this passage, the apostle Peter quotes the prophet Joel, who received a message from God describing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that will come in the Last Days:
“‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below—“
Acts of the Apostles 2:17-19 NLT
But the Charismatic church does not demonstrate true godly power, and there is no verifiable evidence of tangible miracles among them. Instead, there are frequent claims of blind eyes and deaf ears being opened, limbs growing, cancer being instantly cured, the lame walking, and even the dead being raised - yet without any credible proof to support these claims. Some even go so far as to prophesy over individuals using data-mined information from their social media accounts.
Scripture warned about false teachers blatantly lying from the pulpit:
“In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money.”
2. Peter 2:3 NLT
The physical manifestations claimed to be God’s power at work are important for these deceptive Charismatic movements to undergird their promise of a huge revival coming. They use the things people can see to bolster their lies about billions of souls being saved so gullible Christians with a heart for others to find salvation can sow into their ministries. Every day, the lie gains traction as they “prove” by manifestations that God is really among them. Sadly, God is not among them. They are being deceived on a massive scale.
The concept of a worldwide End-Time revival is contrary to Scripture. The apostle Paul warns:
“The Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.”
1. Timothy 4:1 NLT
CONCLUSION
While the Charismatic church follows the deceptive Kundalini spirit and all its uncontrollable physical manifestations, those who know God and His Word are not deceived by it. We know that these things are evil because one of the fruits that the Holy Spirit produces in a child of God is “self-control,” according to Galatians 5:23.
Additionally, Scripture speaks about self-control in the following verses:
“God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
2. Timothy 1:7 ESV
“A church leader must exercise self-control,…”
1. Timothy 3:2 NLT
“In the same way, their wives must exercise self-control…”
1. Timothy 3:11 NLT
“People who prophesy are in control of their spirit…”
1. Corinthians 14:32 NLT
It is clear that no Christian should be overcome by strange energies flowing uncontrollably through their bodies, causing involuntary movements. It is also clear that New Age Eastern philosophy should have no place in the Christian Church. If your church is accepting and practicing these mystical practices, we advise you to leave that church.
When a church is focused on outward manifestations, it is a sign that they are operating under the curse of the law. When a church is under grace, they preach sound New Covenant doctrine and emphasize the work the Holy Spirit is doing within a person.
The Bible warns us against deceptive teachings:
“So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s GRACE,..”
Hebrews 13:9 NLT
It also encourages us to practice discernment and a single-minded focus on Christ:
“Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”
Colossians 4:2 NLT
This way, we will not be in danger of falling under the spell of the Kundalini deception or any other false teaching.
