So many Christians can “talk the talk,” but their walk contradicts what they preach! They are like the religious teachers in the Bible Jesus rebuked, saying: “For they don’t practice what they teach.” (Matthew 23:4 NLT)

The apostle Paul also said the same thing about them:

“Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples?”

Romans 2:21-22 NLT

“You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.”

Romans 2:1 NLT

First John 4 verse 1 says:

“Do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God.”

1. John 4:1 NLT

In other words, we must discern that what they are saying and doing is indeed lining up with God’s Word.

Jesus made this clear when He said:

“Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.”

Matthew 7:20 NLT

Here are some more Scriptures about those who calls themselves Christians and yet disobediently lives a lifestyle of doing the opposite of what God commands – and how we should treat them,

“Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them.  Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.”

Romans 16:17-18 NLT

“You are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.”

1. Corinthians 5:11 NLT

“They will be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”

2. Timothy 3:4-5 NLT

“Such people claim they know God, but they deny Him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.”

Titus 1:16 NLT

“These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want.”

Jude 1:16 NLT

“If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness.  Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. But anyone who hates a fellow believer is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.”

1. John 2:9-11 NLT

The bottom-line is,

“If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.  But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love Him. That is how we know we are living in Him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.”
