Those, who do not believe in speaking in tongues, say it was only a one-time event for the believers at that time in the Bible. What they are actually saying is, that it doesn’t exist nowadays anymore! Many, who oppose speaking in tongues, link it to the Charismatic Christians who promote speaking in tongues, people they think are somewhat flaky. They often show their disgust for it by calling the speaking in tongues demonic or a form of chanting, and they vehemently forbid anybody from practicing it.
But Jesus promised, that those who believe in Him will speak in new tongues when He commanded His disciples to:
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; THEY WILL SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:15-18 NKJV
It says in the Bible book of Acts chapter 1, verses 4-5 that,
“Once when Jesus was eating with them, He commanded them, do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift He promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 1:4-5 NLT
And then it happened!
“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4 NKJV
All the disciples were speaking in tongues! Now as they were going around and about preaching the gospel, others they prayed for also ended up speaking in new tongues.
An example of this is when the apostle Peter ministered to the Cornelius family:
“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” Acts 10:44-46 NLT
This is also exactly what happened when the apostle Paul traveled through the interior provinces and came to Ephesus, where he found several believers:
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we don’t know what you mean. We haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and THEY SPOKE IN OTHER TONGUES and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.” (See Acts 19:1-7)
It is this same apostle Paul, who admonished the Corinthian Church to be eager to prophesy and NOT to forbid speaking in tongues!!!
“So, dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues.” 1. Corinthians 14:39 NLT.
Or, as he said to them:
“I wish you all had the gift of speaking in tongues.” 1. Corinthians 14:5 NLT
Therefore, it is God’s desire for every born-again Christian to speak in tongues, and no church should forbid believers from speaking in tongues!
Why? Because the Bible says:
“For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally.” 1. Corinthians 14:2+4 NLT
