Some time ago, a man I used to know liked to refer to a female cult leader that he had a great disdain for as “fat cow.”
According to the dictionary there are at least 20 words related to “fat cow.” Here are some of them: bitch, ugly, fat, obese, fatass, chunky, and stupid to name a few.
It might have been an offensive thing to say, but the way he so sincerely said “fat cow” and the thought of how fitting it was made me laugh just thinking about it. And then, when I remembered that I had actually seen those words in the Bible, in the book of Amos, I had to go look it up again.
In Amos 4 verse 1, the prophet Amos brings a word from God to some women, calling them “fat cows.” Here is what is says:
“Listen to me, you fat cows living in Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, and who are always calling to your husbands, “Bring us another drink!”
These women were called “fat cows” because they were extremely pampered and well fed! These women were the ones who were selfishly controlling and pushing their husbands to oppress the helpless in order to support their lavish life-styles!
My friend didn’t know how right he was about women like that. These women were so lazy that they called down God’s attention to themselves for their evil actions of oppressing and crushing the poor and needy, a great sin in God’s eyes.
