Contrary to what many preachers erroneously teach, Jesus was not rich! I once heard a famous televangelist saying that Jesus was a billionaire because he had a bookkeeper and was wearing designer clothes. That was seemingly also why the soldiers at Jesus’ crucifixion were throwing lot for his (expensive) clothing.

Jesus did have money though. We know this because He designated Judas, one of His disciples to be the treasurer (see John 13:29). People like Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager, Susanna, and many others were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and His disciples (see Luke 8:3).

However, Jesus was poor compared to what He had before coming to earth. He voluntarily and humbly gave up everything in order to reach others! He even said,

Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head. Matthew 8:20 NLT

This can also be said about the apostle Paul, who testified,

We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything. 2. Corinthians 6:10 NLT

And in another passage Paul said,

I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. Philippians 4:11-12 NLT
